An American returns to Tokyo try to pick up threads of his pre-WW2 life there, but finds himself squeezed between criminals and the authorities.

Joe Barrett returns to Tokyo after World War II where he once owned a bar, Tokyo Joe's, and deserted his wife Trina. They have a seven-year-old daughter. Veteran Joe Barrett returns to Tokyo three years after the War to reclaim his nightclub, Tokyo Joe's, and his wife Trina, whom believed dead. Although the club has been watched over by his close friend Ito, h! e finds that his Trina has divorced him to marry an amiable, high-ranking American official, Mark Landis. Joe vows to win his wife back, but needs a valid reason to extend his visa. He finds it in an unholy alliance with ex-Japanese intelligence officer Baron Kimura, who wishes Joe to front for him as owner a small local airline. As added leverage, Kimura threatens to reveal Trina's wartime treason as a Tokyo Rose-type collaborator. When Joe finds out that he's slated to fly war criminals back to Japan to foment an insurgency against the American occupation and his seven year old daughter has been kidnapped to insure his co-operation, he knows that the time for action has come.
